My itunes playlist - called "marathon" - is critical to my daily runs. Building, editing, and keeping said list up to date is essential to keeping me up to demands of my daily runs.

But what's ALSO important is making sure that I don't spend too much time listening to the playlist when I'm not running.

Yes - listen carefully to this one. If you make a running playlist, try to limit your listening to only when you are running. This will train your body to pick up the pace when you hear certain songs, and to crave the run as much as you crave the music.
